How Registrants Maintain Their Permits with the CRNA

June 15, 2026

Registrants of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), including registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), are required to renew their permits on an annual basis to continue practising under a protected title or designation in Alberta.

As a regulator under the Health Professions Act, the CRNA ensures its registrants meet all the requirements to practise in a safe, competent and ethical manner.

Registrants must fulfill several requirements to renew their permits, including:

  • Ensuring their personal and employer information is up to date
  • Attesting to meeting the currency of practice requirement
  • Answering good character and fitness to practise questions
  • Attesting to having completed the Continuing Competence Program requirements
  • Reviewing and addressing any conditions on their permit
  • Obtaining professional liability protection

If a permit application is denied or if a permit expires due to non-renewal, the individual can no longer work under a protected title or designation in Alberta. The CRNA informs employers when a registrant’s permit status changes to expired.

Anyone can verify an individual’s registration and permit status with the CRNA, using the permit verification tool.
