The Health Information Act (HIA) establishes mechanisms to protect privacy rights and confidentiality of Albertans by setting rules for the access, collection, use and disclosure of health information.
Effective June 22, 2026, the HIA has been updated in response to evolving health information practices and to support team-based care, governance for shared health information, privacy and data-driven innovations.
Changes to the HIA may have an impact on how registrants manage and safeguard health information in their practice. Registrants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the changes and review any updates to organizational policies and processes related to the management of health information.
The updated HIA can be found here: Health Information Act

If you have questions regarding the HIA, you may contact HIAHelpDesk@gov.ab.ca. For questions related to practice, registrants are encouraged to contact the CRNA’s Practice Guidance team.
