Scope of Practice

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is committed to providing clarity about what is expected of its registrants. 

Patients, employers and registrants often have questions about how to interpret and apply legislation and the CRNA standards and guidelines to nursing practice. As health care evolves, the CRNA provides additional information to ensure: 

  • The public is protected.
  • That registrants practise within their scope of practice.
  • That registrants are aware of and adhere to their regulatory responsibilities and accountabilities.

Provides guidance and direction on the responsibilities and accountabilities of registrants to provide care that is culturally safe and inclusive.

Provides a framework to support registrants in their responsibilities and accountabilities related to patient safety. 
Flu Immunization – RN Responsibilities (2020)

Provides direction to RNs who are involved in flu immunization programs. 
Injectable Aesthetic Therapies (2023)

The purpose of this document is to inform nurses of their professional responsibilities and accountabilities related to injectable aesthetic therapies. 

This practice advice was developed collaboratively by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA), the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA), and the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
