The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is committed to efficient, consistent and transparent registration practices for all applicants. As a regulator, the CRNA is responsible for ensuring that our registrants provide safe, competent and ethical care. All applicants, regardless of their origins must meet the same requirements to receive an NP permit in Alberta.
The CRNA appreciates that there is excitement regarding the new opportunities for NPs and recognizes that they are highly sought professionals in Alberta. The College remains committed to ensuring equitable registration opportunities and improving our processes for the benefit of Alberta's health care ecosystem.

The CRNA acknowledges that physicians have been providing autonomous primary care to patients as the most responsible practitioner for a considerable amount of time. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) has standards of practice that are designed to support autonomous primary care. Some of the guidance in the FAQs has been adapted from the CPSA's standards of practice with their permission. Patients are entitled to safe, competent and ethical care whether they are being treated by a physician or an NP.
