Sept. 29, 2021
Sept. 30, 2021 will mark Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation “to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by residential schools and to honour those who were lost and the survivors, families and communities who continue to grieve."
It is a priority for all of us to gain understanding and perspectives from an Indigenous lens, especially when it comes to our health system. Through continuous education and collaboration with Indigenous communities and nurses, we strive to enhance the nursing care Indigenous peoples receive. We want to recognize that we have registrants who are Indigenous nurses and that their voices matter now more than ever. We also want to recognize Indigenous nurses who have attended residential schools and those who are intergenerational survivors.
To continue our educational journey, the CRNA staff will attend an educational session to learn, explore and recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, previously known as Orange Shirt Day. Presented by Amanda Gould, our Indigenous Cultural Advisor, these sessions help support the CRNA’s progressive culture of inclusivity and diversity. Please note, during this time (9-10 a.m. MST), the call centre will be closed.
Our course for registrants, Stronger Together: Learning Through Indigenous Perspectives focuses on increasing knowledge of Indigenous people and promotes nursing care that is compassionate and trauma-informed in Alberta. The course was developed in collaboration with Indigenous elders and Indigenous communities throughout Alberta.
Inclusivity is important not only in our organization but also in the care our registrants provide. The CRNA encourages registrants and the public to take the opportunity to fully understand Indigenous cultural and historical significance, especially on this day.
Working alongside Indigenous communities, our goal is to continually earn trust and develop mutually beneficial relationships.
The CRNA encourages registrants and the public to show your support and be part of this dynamic and positive movement in our country.
