Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sept. 29, 2023

September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is a solemn reminder of the painful legacy of Residential schools and the ongoing journey toward healing and understanding. To honour and understand truth and reconciliation, it is important to acknowledge the injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island, otherwise known as Canada.

Residential schools across Turtle Island were established to assimilate Indigenous children which had a profound impact on survivors and their families and often resulted in intergenerational trauma.

Inclusivity is important not only in our organization, but also in the care our registrants provide. The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) encourages registrants and the public to take the opportunity to fully understand Indigenous cultural and historical significance, especially on this day.

Our Commitment

The College remains steadfast in our commitment to improve the health and well being of Indigenous Peoples, driven by our dedication to further our understanding of Indigenous culture and history. Together, we aspire to play a meaningful role in contributing to a better future founded on unity and respect.

As a part of our commitment to support the delivery of culturally safe care, registrants and College employees have access to a course, Stronger Together: Learning Through Indigenous Perspectives. This course focuses on increasing knowledge of Indigenous people and promotes nursing care that is compassionate and trauma-informed and was developed in collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people throughout Alberta.
