The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta's (CRNA) standards of practice, often referred to simply as ‘standards’, provide guidance to the nursing profession by clearly identifying the minimum expectations that registrants must meet when providing professional services.
Standards may be developed because they are legislatively required, government mandated, or when broader direction is required to serve the public interest and to reduce the risk of harm to the public.
Built on a foundation of current research, best practices and societal norms, the CRNA's standards prioritize the public interest, patient safety and quality of care, while also embracing diversity, inclusivity, equity, accessibility and cultural safety. They are reflective of current practices in health care, supporting the CRNA's registrants in understanding what is expected of them in the delivery of safe, competent and ethical care across diverse settings and practice areas.
The CRNA's standards are developed and updated in consultation with registrants, Albertans, the Government of Alberta and other applicable partners. The CRNA has a defined process to ensure interested parties have an opportunity to provide feedback.
All standards must be approved by our Council before taking effect.
