April 25, 2024
The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) commends the Government of Alberta and the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta (NPAA) for their efforts to expand Albertans’ access to primary care through the introduction of the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Program. We are committed to working with the province, our health partners and our registrants to make this new program a success.
Nurse practitioners (NPs) have extensive education, training and a broad scope of practice that enables them to provide comprehensive care to their patients, including directing and coordinating longitudinal care and management for their patients.
As the regulatory body responsible for regulating NPs and registered nurses in Alberta, the CRNA has a duty to ensure NPs participating in the nurse practitioner program have the regulatory support, direction and guidance to provide safe and competent care to their patients.
The CRNA is reviewing the details of the province’s April 25 announcement. Over the coming weeks, we will provide information, guidance and direction to NPs who work in primary care and for NPs who may be interested in participating in the program specifically. We are also reviewing opportunities to develop standards of practice and practice assurance measures.
The CRNA encourages NPs and others who may be interested to visit nurses.ab.ca on a regular basis (starting on May 3, 2024) for more information on these developing initiatives.
