As a regulatory body, the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) serves the public interest by regulating the registered nursing practice in Alberta. Fees cover the costs of this regulatory process, which includes:
- Assessment of applicants to join or renew their status on the register
- Implementing accountabilities for the nursing practice through standards and continuing competence
- Addressing conduct concerns related to registrants
- Performing regulatory functions that align with the CRNA's mandate

Permit Fees

In addition to a permit, all registrants sign up for, or renew, their Professional Liability Protection and Core Services from the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS).

Applicants who apply for permits during May, June, July, August or September will pay a fee based on the number of months remaining in the year.

Disciplinary Matters Costs
On a case-by-case basis, registrants may receive a fine for unprofessional conduct or to cover hearing costs. The CRNA publishes fines in the hearing decisions and disciplinary complaint resolution agreements.
Additional Fees
Applicants may need to pay additional fees payable to other organizations depending on their application pathway and the information they provide. Possible extra costs may include the following:
- Registering with the exam provider to write a registration entrance exam or to transfer results.
- Completing a credential assessment of post-secondary education.
- Completing a competency assessment exam or program.
- Taking an English proficiency test.
- Applying to and completing a Canadian bridging or nursing refresher program.
- Completing any additional education to fill competency gaps (nurse practitioners).
- Conducting a criminal record check if you do not currently reside in Canada.
- Paying verification fees from another jurisdiction.
